Few places on the South Carolina coast saw more fighting than Fort Wagner, the earthwork on Morris Island that guarded the approach to Charleston harbor. Union assaults in 1863, including the charge led by the 54th Massachusetts, failed to take it, and Confederate forces abandoned it in early September 1863 as Union siege lines closed in. This stereograph pair, made by photographer James F. Gibson from two glass negatives, was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, where the halves merge into a single three-dimensional view of the battered works. Its caption dates the evacuation to September 6, and the picture shows the site as it stood during the postwar years.
