Fort Wagner, on Morris Island at the entrance to Charleston harbor, appears here not as a battlefield but as a working garrison, with soldiers living inside its earthen walls. Confederate forces abandoned the works in September 1863 after a long Union siege, and Federal troops held the post until the war ended. James F. Gibson made this stereograph in April 1865, a month that saw the Confederacy collapse. Its two glass plates were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which gives the cramped quarters a sense of depth.
