From the south parapet of Fort Wagner, this stereograph looks out across Morris Island toward the approaches to Charleston. The earthwork was the site of a costly Union assault on July 18, 1863, led by the 54th Massachusetts, and Confederate forces abandoned it that September after a prolonged Union siege. By 1865, when this view was made, the fort had become a landmark of the war's final stretch. The image survives as two glass negatives meant to be seen together for depth, and the record notes that it was once credited to Alexander Gardner.
