A stereograph pair of the interior of Fort Moultrie, on Sullivan's Island near Charleston, South Carolina, this picture survives as two side-by-side glass plates that give the scene depth when viewed through a stereoscope. The fort had guarded the harbor since the Revolutionary War, and by 1865 it stood in a region the Civil War had reshaped, as Charleston's defenses were abandoned and Union forces moved in. The wet collodion process used for these plates was the standard method of the period, and the record notes that the photographer was once thought to be Alexander Gardner, an attribution that has since been revised.
