What sets this stereograph apart is that its title places the photographer, Samuel Cooley, on the Battery with his camera. The caption points across the harbor toward Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired in April 1861. Made in 1865, after Union forces had taken Charleston that February, the view records the harbor in the war's final months. Its two glass plates each hold one eye's view, so a stereoscope fuses them into a single three-dimensional scene.
