The broken walls of Circular Church stand in the foreground of this view, with the spire of St. Philip's rising in the distance. The Circular Congregational Church had been gutted by the great fire that swept Charleston in December 1861, and its ruins were still standing when James F. Gibson made this stereograph in 1865, after Union forces had occupied the city. Recorded as a pair of glass plates meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, the image gives the scene depth and shows how much of the old city lay in damaged, unrepaired ruin.
