Few pictures in the Civil War glass negative collection show the ruined depot of the North Eastern Railroad in Charleston, South Carolina, as it stood in 1865. The image survives as a stereograph pair, two wet collodion glass plates meant to be viewed together for a three-dimensional effect. Charleston had been evacuated by Confederate forces in February 1865, and fires that month destroyed much of the city's center, so the wreckage of a rail depot speaks to the war's cost on the city's transportation network. The record credits the photograph to Charleston but notes that it was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, a leading wartime photographer.
