Few views from Charleston in 1865 show the aftermath of the city's evacuation as directly as this pair of glass plates. The caption on the original negative sleeve identifies the ruins as those of the Northeastern Railroad depot, where it says about 200 people were killed when the building was blown up on the day the Confederates left the city in February 1865. The figure comes from that caption and is not confirmed elsewhere, so treat it with caution. The image was made as a stereograph, two side-by-side exposures meant to be viewed together for depth, and it was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, a photographer who documented the war for much of the period.
