The interior of St. John and St. Finbar, Charleston's Catholic cathedral, appears here as a ruin, its walls standing open to the sky. Many buildings in the city were burned or gutted during the war, and the fire of February 1865, which followed the Confederate evacuation and the Union occupation, destroyed much of the downtown area. This picture survives as a stereograph pair, with two plates meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth. It was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now doubtful.
