Only the negative sleeve identifies this view, and it gives the place as Charleston, South Carolina, in 1865 but leaves the name of the ruin blank, so the building itself remains unidentified. The image is a stereograph pair: two glass plates made to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which gave a sense of depth. Confederate forces evacuated Charleston in February 1865, and fires that month destroyed much of the city's central business district, so ruins like this were a common subject for photographers working there that year. The plates were once credited to Alexander Gardner, an attribution that has since been revised.
