Only ruins remain of the Northeastern Railroad depot in this view of Charleston, which the negative's caption says was blown up on the day the city was evacuated. Confederate forces abandoned Charleston in February 1865 as Union troops closed in, destroying military stores and rail facilities on their way out. The picture survives as a stereograph pair on two wet collodion glass plates, designed to give depth when viewed through a stereoscope. The caption's claim that 200 people died in the blast is not corroborated elsewhere in the record.
