Ruins of the North Eastern Railroad depot in Charleston, South Carolina, show a rail hub that was left in wreckage after the Union campaign against the city. Charleston had been a center of secession and a long-running target of Union naval and land operations, and by early 1865 the city had been largely abandoned by Confederate forces. This view was made as a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical images meant to be seen together through a stereoscope for a convincing sense of depth. Its publisher, E. & H.T. Anthony of New York, sold such views widely, so the picture reached audiences far from the damaged streets it records.
