Few places in Charleston show the war's toll as plainly as this depot, which was photographed in 1865 as the city was emerging from four years of siege. The Northwestern Railroad, which ran inland from Charleston, was one of the rail lines that carried supplies and troops during the conflict. Charleston's collapse early that year left much of the downtown and its transportation infrastructure damaged, and the Union occupation that followed brought photographers to document the ruins. Because this image is a stereograph card, its two nearly identical views were meant to be seen together through a viewer, giving the broken structure a sense of depth for home audiences of the period.
