Few wartime Charleston views name a specific business as clearly as this one, which identifies Archibald McLeish's Vulcan Iron Works on Cumberland alongside neighboring houses. Taken in 1865, it is a stereograph, a pair of glass plates meant to be viewed through a stereoscope so the street appears to stand out in depth. The city had been shelled by Union forces and damaged by a large fire in 1861, and by early 1865 Confederate troops had withdrawn and Union forces had taken control, so the scene captures a port city in the uneasy months that followed. The New York firm E. & H.T. Anthony, a major stereograph publisher, issued the pair.
