Colonel Robert Gould Shaw's death at the head of his men is the centerpiece of this Currier & Ives lithograph, which shows the 54th Massachusetts (colored) regiment charging the rebel works at Fort Wagner on Morris Island, near Charleston, on July 18, 1863. The assault aimed to take the earthen fort guarding the approach to Charleston harbor, and it failed at heavy cost, with Shaw among the dead. The 54th was one of the first Black regiments raised in the North, and its courage under fire did much to counter doubts about enlisting Black men as soldiers. Published in New York that same year, the print turned the regiment's sacrifice into a patriotic scene for a northern public.
