Titled for Charleston, South Carolina, this stereograph points to the site of a night attack on Fort Sumter on September 8, 1863. That Union effort to storm the harbor fortress by boat failed with heavy losses, and the harbor remained contested for the rest of the war. The pair of images dates to 1865, after Union forces had occupied Charleston in February, and was published by E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm known for stereo views. Seen through a stereoscope, the two halves give the harbor and its battered defenses a depth that a flat print cannot.
