Fort Sumter, the brick fortification on a shoal at the mouth of Charleston Harbor, is seen here from a sand bar, a vantage that puts the ruined walls in the foreground of the harbor. This stereograph pair was made in 1865, after the Union had spent more than three years trying to reduce the fort, where the first shots of the Civil War had been fired in April 1861. Photographed by the firm of E. & H.T. Anthony, the two glass plates were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, giving the scene a sense of depth. The pictures are worth studying for the battered masonry they show, a reminder of how much the Union bombardment had reduced the fort.
