A beacon rising from the parapet of Fort Sumter sets this view apart from the many pictures of the fort's shattered walls. The fort, on an island at the mouth of Charleston Harbor, was where the Civil War opened in April 1861, when Confederate batteries fired on the Union garrison, and Union guns battered it through much of the years that followed. The stereograph was issued by E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm that sold paired views like this one to a wide public. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two halves give the ruined masonry and the beacon real depth.
