Fort Sumter's battered walls in Charleston Harbor form the setting, with a crowd gathered inside the fort itself. The timing points to the flag-raising of April 14, 1865, when Union forces returned to the fort four years after Major Robert Anderson surrendered it to Confederate batteries, and the same flag Anderson had lowered was raised again. Henry Ward Beecher gave the principal address at that ceremony. Because the record catalogs the view under commemoration and military parades, it shows a moment when the war's opening battleground was being reclaimed as a Union triumph.
