Inside the ruined walls of Fort Sumter, woven gabions, large cylinders filled with earth, have been stacked to shore up the damaged masonry. The fort, on an island at the mouth of Charleston harbor, was where the Civil War opened in April 1861 and was later battered by Union bombardment through 1863 to 1865. This stereograph, made from two side-by-side plates and published by the New York firm E. & H.T. Anthony, was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth. Its record notes that the image appears in a 1977 Library of Congress compilation of Civil War photographs.
