Fort Moultrie sits on Sullivan's Island at the entrance to Charleston Harbor, and this stereograph records one of its mounted gun parapets in 1865, just as the Civil War was ending. The image is a glass stereograph made with the wet collodion process, a pair of plates that give the scene depth when viewed through a stereoscope. The fort had been a defensive anchor for the harbor since the Revolutionary War, and by the time this view was taken it had seen repeated action and reinforcement during the Union siege of Charleston. Anthony's firm sold views like this widely, so the picture also reflects how northern audiences followed the war's ruined Southern landmarks.
