Taken from the parapet of Fort Moultrie, this stereograph looks northeast over the defenses guarding the approach to Charleston Harbor on Sullivan's Island. The fort had been part of Confederate coastal defense for years, and by 1865 the harbor had endured heavy bombardment and a long Union siege before Charleston was evacuated in February. Made as a stereo card, the image was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the flat photograph a sense of depth and made the earthworks and guns feel close. The caption tags also appear to refer to Castle Pinckney and Civil War artillery, pointing to the wider harbor the photographer was recording.
