Fort Sumter, a masonry fort on an island at the mouth of Charleston Harbor, was where the Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate batteries opened fire on the Union garrison under Major Robert Anderson. The bombardment continued into April 13, and Anderson surrendered the fort before his men were evacuated. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold affordable colored prints of current events, issued this hand-colored lithograph to show the attack to a public eager for news from Charleston.
