Fort Sumter sits on a man-made island at the mouth of Charleston Harbor, and this hand-colored lithograph from the New York firm Currier & Ives presents it as a subject of wide public interest. The fort is best known as the place where Confederate batteries opened fire on the Union garrison in April 1861, starting the Civil War. Currier & Ives produced many inexpensive color prints of notable places and events, so a view like this, issued between 1860 and 1870, would have reached buyers following the conflict or looking back on it. It is catalogued as number 2267 in a standard reference to the firm's work.
