Few places in the Civil War carried as much symbolism as Fort Sumter, the masonry fort at the mouth of Charleston Harbor that was battered into rubble during the conflict. Confederate batteries fired on the fort in April 1861, starting the war, and Union artillery later pounded its walls while the Confederacy held it. This stereograph, dated 1865 with a question mark, shows the wreckage that remained after the fort was reoccupied. Stereographs like this were sold as parlor entertainment, and the paired images gave viewers a three-dimensional look at the damage.
