Few cities in the Civil War were as heavily shelled as Charleston, and this stereograph shows the Cathedral of St. John and St. Finbar, the city's Catholic church, in 1865, the year the Confederates abandoned the city. Its two glass negatives were made to be seen together through a stereoscope, which gave viewers a sense of depth in the church's facade. The photograph was published by E. & H.T. Anthony, one of the leading American firms selling war views to a public eager to see the places in the news.
