Few buildings in Charleston show the damage of the war as plainly as the Cathedral of St. John and St. Finbar, whose walls stand open to the sky in this view. The cathedral was gutted by the great fire that swept the city in December 1861, and the ruins were still standing when photographer James F. Gibson recorded them in 1865, as Union forces occupied the city and the war was ending. The picture survives as a stereograph pair, two glass negatives made to be seen together through a viewer for a three-dimensional effect. Its wet collodion process required the plates to be coated and exposed while still damp.
