Calhoun's grave in the churchyard of St. Philip's in Charleston is the subject here, shown in front of the church where the statesman was buried. John C. Calhoun, the South Carolina senator and former vice president who became the leading defender of slavery and states' rights, died in 1850. This stereograph dates to 1865, the year Union forces occupied Charleston after Confederate troops withdrew in February. It was published by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. and the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, firms that sold views of wartime sites to a northern public. The picture is notable for showing a monument to a leading advocate of secession at a moment when the city that had sheltered the movement had fallen.
