The subject is the graveyard behind the Circular Church in Charleston, South Carolina, which was left standing after the church itself had been ruined. The congregation dated back to the early 1800s, and by 1865 its burial ground, with headstones and older markers, had become a quiet reminder of the city's losses during the war. Charleston was the birthplace of secession and endured a long Union siege and repeated shelling, so pictures like this one showed civilians the damage without the battlefield. This stereograph is a wet collodion glass negative issued by E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm that sold many war views to a home audience eager to see the South's ruined cities.
