Circular Church, a Congregational house of worship on Meeting Street, stands in this bird's-eye view surrounded by the wreckage of the city around it. The picture dates to 1865, when Charleston had endured more than three years of Union naval and artillery bombardment, and fires set during the Confederate evacuation in February of that year had destroyed large parts of the downtown district. Views taken from above like this one were rare at the time and show how far the damage reached across the city's streets and rooftops. The record is based on an old caption card, so some details should be checked against other sources.
