From an elevated vantage point, this print surveys the city of Charleston, South Carolina, as a whole. The record gives no firm date, but its caption card and Civil War Collection placement point to the 1860s, when Charleston stood at the center of the national crisis. The city adopted the ordinance of secession in December 1860, and Confederate forces fired the first shots of the war on nearby Fort Sumter in April 1861. Bird's-eye views like this one were popular for showing a city's layout and built density, which makes them useful for understanding the port before years of siege and fire changed its appearance.
