Charleston sits on a peninsula between the Ashley and Cooper rivers, and this lithograph shows that waterfront setting from an elevated vantage point, as if the viewer hovered above the harbor. Drawn and published by C. Drie in 1872, the print belongs to a popular genre of bird's-eye city views that flourished after the Civil War, when many towns used such pictures to show off their growth. Charleston had endured four years of war, including a long Union siege, and a view like this records how the city looked as it set about recovering. The hand tinting adds color to the water and rooftops, which is worth noticing in a print made to be admired.
