A plain brick facade with rows of tall windows marks this view of the orphan asylum in Charleston, South Carolina. The institution had long cared for children left without parents in the port city, and it operated through the years of the Civil War, when Charleston was blockaded by Union forces and later shelled during the siege. The photograph was made between 1861 and 1865 and printed later, so the print preserves a view of the building as the war was reshaping daily life in the city. Its inclusion in the Library of Congress Civil War photograph collection makes it a useful record of civilian institutions in a city at the center of the conflict.
