Johnston's record places this view at Boone Hall, the Charleston County plantation northeast of the city, where a row of brick cabins stands along the approach to the main house. The catalog entry is uncertain about both the parish and whether the buildings were slave quarters, so the attribution rests on the plantation's known history. Frances Benjamin Johnston made photographs like this between 1936 and 1938, when she documented Southern buildings for the Carnegie-funded survey of Southern architecture. Her images of such dwellings preserve details of construction and setting at a time when many of these structures were deteriorating or being altered.
