This view shows the Orphan Asylum on Calhoun Street in Charleston, South Carolina, preserved as a stereograph pair: two glass negatives made from slightly different positions so the building appears three-dimensional through a stereoscope. The pictures date from 1865, the year Union forces occupied Charleston after Confederate troops evacuated the city in February, when photographers followed the armies to document the damaged and occupied South. The wet collodion process required quick exposure and development, which makes these plates a useful record of the period. Earlier catalogs credited Alexander Gardner, but that attribution is now uncertain.
