Few Charleston views from 1865 show a charitable institution, which makes this stereograph unusual among the city's wartime pictures. The pair of glass negatives, now in the Library of Congress Civil War collection, records an orphan asylum at a moment when the city had changed hands and its civilian institutions were under strain. Union forces occupied Charleston in February 1865, after years of siege and bombardment, and the city was left with damaged buildings, shortages, and many children without families. The plates were long attributed to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now uncertain.
