This stereograph shows the offices of a Treasury agent and a Quartermaster in Charleston, South Carolina, photographed in 1865, when Union forces controlled the city after Confederate troops withdrew in February. Treasury agents in occupied Southern ports oversaw abandoned and confiscated property, while Quartermaster officers supplied the Union army stationed there, so the building was a working center of wartime administration rather than a battlefield. Paired views like this were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which fused the two plates into a single image with depth. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now questioned.
