The steamer inscribed on its sidewheel, the *Gen Hunter*, sets this pencil sketch of Charleston harbor apart from other views of the city from the Civil War years. The name points to Maj. Gen. David Hunter, who commanded Union forces in the South Carolina Lowcountry in 1862 and 1863. Signed by Otto Enz, whose notation refers to an independent battalion, the drawing shows dwellings and military camps along the shore. It reflects a harbor the Union blockade had turned into a contested military zone while Charleston itself remained in Confederate hands until early 1865.
