The grave of John C. Calhoun, the South Carolina statesman who died in 1850, lies in the churchyard of St. Philip's Church in Charleston. Calhoun served as vice president, senator and secretary of state, and he was among the most forceful defenders of slavery and states' rights before the Civil War. This stereograph was issued by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., a New York firm that sold stereo cards widely to viewers who used stereoscopes at home. Its date of about 1865 places it just after the war ended, when Charleston was recovering from the conflict and a grave tied to the Confederate cause would have carried particular meaning for visitors.
