This view of Charleston's Church Street and Queen Street shows two of the city's best-known churches, the French Huguenot Church and St. Philip's, set close together in the same frame. The Huguenot congregation traces its roots to French Protestant refugees who arrived in Charleston in the late 1600s after persecution in France, while St. Philip's is among the oldest Anglican congregations in the city. The photograph was taken by the Detroit Publishing Company between about 1900 and 1915, when the company was documenting American towns and streetscapes, so it captures the Charleston of that period as a record of its architecture and street life.
