Spanish moss hangs from the oaks around St. Andrew's Church, and that draped foliage is what sets this view apart from a plain church portrait. The church belongs to the Anglican parish founded in the Charleston area during the colonial period, and its setting along the Ashley River reflects the plantation-era landscape south of the city. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, which travelled the country in the early twentieth century making views of towns, scenery and landmarks for sale to tourists and publishers.
