This stereograph shows the ruined Catholic cathedral in Charleston, South Carolina, photographed from the front. The church, St. Finbar's, was gutted by the great fire that swept through the city in December 1861, and its blackened walls stood as the war dragged on. Charleston's ruins drew Northern publishers because the city had been the site of secession and, later, of a prolonged Union siege and bombardment. E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. sold views like this one in pairs, so viewers could see the damage in depth.
