Vendue Range, the row of waterfront warehouses where goods were once sold at public auction, is the subject of this stereograph of ruined buildings in Charleston, South Carolina. The city suffered a major fire in December 1861 and endured repeated Union bombardment during the war, which left much of its commercial district gutted. Built as a pair of nearly identical views for a stereoscope, the card gives the broken walls and rubble a sense of depth that flat photographs could not. Its caption dates it to the war years, between 1861 and 1865.
