Rain blurs the spire of St. Philip's in this etching by Elizabeth O'Neill Verner, a Charleston printmaker who devoted much of her work to the city's old churches and streets. The Episcopal congregation on Church Street dates to the colonial period, and its steeple has long been one of the most recognizable landmarks on the Charleston skyline. The print is numbered 7 of an edition of 80 and signed in pencil, so it is a limited impression rather than a unique work, and the record dates it to about 1930.
