The photograph shows a Blakely rifled gun, a British-made piece the Confederates used in coastal defenses, left in a wrecked state after its destruction. Its gaze turns toward the open sea, which hints at the harbor defenses that protected Charleston during the war. The Confederates abandoned the city in February 1865, and they destroyed many of their guns before leaving, so the scene records the aftermath of that evacuation. Photographer James F. Gibson made the image as a stereograph, a pair of plates that produced a three-dimensional view when seen through a viewer.
