A dismantled Blakely rifle, a British-made cannon the Confederates relied on for coastal defense, lies in the foreground of this 1865 view of the South Battery in Charleston. Confederate forces abandoned the city in February 1865 as Union troops advanced, and the guns that had guarded its harbor for years were left behind as scrap. David B. Woodbury made the picture as a stereograph, a pair of glass plates meant to be viewed together for a three-dimensional effect. The scene records the war's aftermath in a city where secession had begun in 1860.
