Facing the harbor at the southern tip of the Charleston peninsula, South Battery is a promenade of old houses set along a seawall, and this view follows the street along that waterfront. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country in the early 1900s, recorded the scene on a large glass negative between 1900 and 1906. Many of Charleston's bayside mansions dated to before the Civil War, and they drew visitors then much as they do now. The image is worth studying for its streetscape, where the houses, gardens and fences stand out as much as the street itself.
