Sunset over the harbor from the South Battery, the tip of the peninsula where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet, gives this view its focus, with the piers and wharves along the waterfront catching the last light. The 8 x 10 inch glass negative dates from roughly 1900 to 1910, when the Detroit Publishing Company was producing large numbers of views of American towns, scenic spots and waterfronts for travel sales and postcards. Charleston's Battery, with its seawall and promenade under old live oaks and palmettos, was a favorite place for residents and visitors to watch the water at dusk.
