Taken near the Battery, Charleston's southern waterfront, this stereograph shows the city's wharves around 1865, just as the Civil War was ending. Charleston, where secession was declared in 1860, had been under Union blockade and siege for years before its occupation in February 1865, so the quiet waterfront carries the weight of that moment. E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., a major New York photographic firm, issued such stereo cards for viewing at home, bringing distant war sites to parlors across the North. The pilings and waterfront are worth a close look, as they reflect a harbor city cut off from its usual trade.
