Three cannon stand in a row on Vanderhoffs Wharf, a waterfront in Charleston, South Carolina, where Confederate harbor defenses were built. The picture dates to April 1865, about two months after Confederate forces left the city in February and Union troops moved in, so it captures the armament as it was found at war's end. Like other stereographs of the period, it was made as a pair of nearly identical images that produced a three-dimensional view through a stereoscope, a popular parlor entertainment of the 1860s and 1870s.
